Function and Technical Context

The sacrificial anode of the gearcase acts as a cathodic protection element in the lower unit housing, attracting galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the structural metal parts of the outboard motor. Located in the gear case, this zinc component corrodes in a controlled manner to preserve the integrity of the propeller, shaft and gearcase itself. Its progressive deterioration is precisely the signal that it is performing its function: protecting the motor's metal components from the electrochemical attack of salt water, brackish water or even fresh water with minerals. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly damage the lower unit, causing costly and dangerous failures during navigation. This anode is compatible with Johnson and Evinrude motors from 90 to 115 HP, replacing manufacturer references OMC 5032543 and 5032930, as well as Suzuki reference 55321-90J01.

When to Replace This Part?

The anode should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season: when its mass has been reduced by around 50% compared to the initial size, it is essential to replace it before it ceases to provide real protection. The symptoms of an exhausted anode are visible to the naked eye—reduced to a minimal metal core, with very irregular surface and pitting—and, in advanced cases, pitting or surface corrosion may appear on the gearcase itself. It is recommended to replace it preventively at least once a year, or more frequently if the vessel is moored in areas with high electrical conductivity of the water; acting in time prevents structural damage to the lower unit that requires repairs at significantly higher cost.
