Function and Technical Context

The fuel filter is part of the outboard engine fuel supply system and acts as a protective barrier against solid particles, emulsified water and sediments that may come from the fuel tank. Operating in-line before the fuel injection or carburation system, it retains impurities that, if they reach the fuel pump or injectors, would cause premature wear or blockage of the fuel passages. In outboard engines of the Suzuki DF range, as well as in Johnson and Evinrude units of the BJ, E and J series, a filter in poor condition can result in fuel supply interruptions, progressive loss of power or unexpected engine shutdowns while underway. This component is directly interchangeable with Suzuki references 15410-87J10 and 15410-60C00, as well as with OMC references 0765573, 5030702 and 5032323.

When to Replace This Part?

The most common symptoms of a clogged or deteriorated fuel filter include difficulty starting the engine in cold conditions, hesitation or power cuts at full throttle, and erratic behavior during sudden acceleration that temporarily disappears when fuel demand is reduced. As a general preventive maintenance rule, it is recommended to replace the fuel filter every 100 operating hours or at the start of each boating season, whichever comes first. Changing the filter preventively, especially before long passages, avoids breakdowns at sea whose resolution is always more costly than the spare part itself.
