Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as cathodic protection in the anti-electrolysis system of the outboard motor, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the structural metal parts of the engine - casing, propeller, body of the power unit - against galvanic corrosion caused by contact with salt or brackish water. As zinc is a metal with a greater negative electrochemical potential, the anode attracts corrosion to itself, preventing premature deterioration of critical and expensive components. Without cathodic protection in good condition, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly damage the engine block, mounts and other metal parts submerged or in contact with water.

When to replace this part?

The main indicator that the zinc anode needs to be replaced is visible mass loss: when the anode has consumed between 50% and 75% of its volume, it has reached the limit of its useful life and must be replaced before it no longer offers effective protection. It is recommended to inspect it during each seasonal maintenance - at least once a year - and replace it preventively at the beginning of each nautical season if it shows significant wear. Replacing the anode in time is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to high-cost components and ensure engine longevity.
