Function and technical context

This sacrificial tail anode for 4-stroke outboard motors acts as an electrochemical shield for the submerged metal parts of the propulsion unit, concentrating in itself the galvanic corrosion process that would otherwise attack the motor foot, the tail shaft, and the lower transmission components. Manufactured from high-purity zinc, it is installed directly on the motor tail and works within the cathodic protection system of the propulsion assembly. Its correct operation is especially critical in saltwater and brackish waters, where electrolytic activity is more aggressive; if the anode is completely consumed or one made of incorrect material is installed, corrosion rapidly advances toward aluminum alloy parts of the lower block, the bevel gear, and the tail housing, generating structural damage that is expensive to repair. This reference is compatible with Suzuki and OMC motors, and replaces OMC references 5032929, 5032542, 5035150, as well as the Suzuki family 55125-90J / 55125-93J / 55125-98J.

When to replace this part?

A tail anode should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season; the usual technical rule is to replace it when it has lost approximately 50 % of its mass, without waiting for it to disappear completely. The clearest visual indicators that it needs replacement are a very irregular, whitish or powdery surface, an obvious reduction in volume compared to the new profile, or the appearance of corrosion pitting on adjacent metal surfaces of the motor foot. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid serious failures in the lower transmission during navigation.
