Description

Function and technical context

The aluminum anode is the central element of the cathodic protection system in marine outboard engines. Installed in the submerged structure of the propeller, it acts as a galvanic sacrifice to neutralize the electrochemical corrosion that affects metals in permanent contact with salt or fresh water. In water cooling circuits, the coexistence of different metals—aluminum, iron, copper—generates galvanic couples that accelerate the deterioration of the cylinder head, engine block and other critical structural components. The anode preferentially oxidizes, offering protection to these noble elements; Without its active presence, corrosion would advance rapidly throughout the submerged area, compromising the tightness, mechanical integrity and operational reliability of the engine.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be replaced when it shows visible wear, obvious material loss or when its mass has been reduced by 50-70% of its size; This typically occurs every season of heavy use or every 1-2 years depending on water conditions and boating time. The inspection should be carried out at the beginning and end of each season, especially on boats operated in salt water where corrosion is more aggressive. Replacing the anode preventively during seasonal maintenance prevents the engine's noble metals from suffering corrosion, preventing costly repairs and unforeseen navigation stops.
