Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection system of Yamaha outboard motors. This metallic element is strategically installed in submerged areas of the engine, where it acts as a protective barrier against galvanic corrosion caused by continuous exposure to salt water or fresh water. Its function is to preferentially rust rather than critical metal parts of the engine, thus preventing premature deterioration of cylinder heads, blocks, cooling pipes and other structural parts. Without a functional anode, corrosion would advance rapidly on the aluminum and steel of the engine, compromising the tightness of the cooling system and the structural integrity of the assembly.

When to replace this part?

The sacrificial anode must be inspected at least once per boating season, and replaced when it shows visible wear, surface erosion or when it has lost more than 50% of its mass. In saltwater environments, the replacement interval generally ranges from 12 to 18 months of regular use, while in freshwater the duration may be extended. A deteriorated anode loses its protective capacity, immediately exposing the rest of the engine components to accelerated corrosion. Replacing the anode preventatively is a recommended practice that prevents costly cylinder head or block repairs and ensures engine longevity.
