Function and technical context

This aluminum anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the outboard's cathodic protection system, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the structural metal parts of the engine: the gearbox, tailshaft, propeller and drive unit housing. It works within the anti-corrosion protection system that is essential in salt and brackish water environments, where the difference in electrochemical potential between different metals accelerates degradation. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced in time, the galvanic attack falls directly on vital components of the engine, causing irreparable damage to high-cost parts and compromising the structural integrity of the propulsion assembly.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode needs replacement is its visible wear: when it has lost approximately half of its mass or has an irregular, severely eroded or practically non-existent surface, it should be replaced immediately. It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season and replace it when the level of wear exceeds 50%, regardless of the time elapsed, since the rate of consumption depends on the salinity of the water and the hours of navigation. Replacing it preventively at each seasonal inspection is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to the gearbox or drive shaft away from port.
