The impeller is the central component of the water cooling circuit in marine petrol engines, responsible for drawing in seawater and propelling it through the engine block to dissipate the heat generated by combustion. Coupled to the camshaft or water pump, it rotates at high revolutions maintaining a continuous and constant flow of marine coolant. Without an impeller in good condition, water circulation is interrupted or slowed down considerably, causing rapid engine overheating, loss of power, deformation of head gaskets and, in extreme cases, seizure of the cylinder block.

When to replace this part?

Rubber impellers wear progressively from abrasive friction caused by particles of salt, sand and sediment suspended in seawater. Symptoms of wear include engine overheating even at cruising speeds, frequent activation of the thermal alarm, noticeable decrease in cooling water pressure and, in advanced states, dripping of gummy fragments into the water intake. It is recommended to check the condition of the impeller every navigation season or every 300-400 hours of operation, replacing it preventively before it breaks completely; This practice avoids costly navigation breakdowns and guarantees maximum reliability of the cooling system.
