Description

Function and technical context

The Yamaha 67C-45371-00 sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection of submerged or semi-immersed marine engines. It is installed in strategic areas of the engine block exposed to salt or brackish water, acting as an electrochemical barrier that absorbs galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack critical components of iron, steel and aluminum alloys. By preferentially running the anode instead of the metal parts of the engine, it significantly extends the life of the cylinder head, block, impeller blades and other sensitive parts. Without a healthy anode, marine corrosion progresses rapidly causing internal leaks, engine overheating and serious mechanical failures that can render the vessel inoperable.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes are gradually consumed during each saltwater boating season; The usual thing is to check its condition at the beginning of each season and replace it if it shows more than 50% visible wear or if a large part of its mass has disappeared. The frequency of replacement depends on the intensity of use and the salinity of the water, although as a general rule it is advisable to inspect and change the anode every year or every 200-300 hours of operation in saline water. Regular preventive replacement is much more economical than repairing corrosion damage to the engine block, which can lead to internal leaks and costly breakdowns.
