Description

Function and technical context

The shaft anode is a cathodic protection component that is installed directly on the tail shaft of the boat, acting as a sacrificial metal to protect the submerged metal parts – shaft, propeller, horn and rudder – against galvanic corrosion caused by electrolysis in water. Being made of zinc or equivalent alloy, this anode preferentially oxidizes before the nobler metals of the propulsion system, preventing corrosion from affecting expensive and difficult-to-access structural parts. Its correct operation is essential in any boat that remains in the water, especially in ports with high electrical activity or in salt water, where galvanic corrosion is especially aggressive. Without this element, the propulsion shaft and propeller can suffer severe corrosion in a single season, compromising the integrity of the transmission system.

When to replace this part?

The wear of the shaft anodes is completely normal and expected: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its mass, it must be replaced without delay, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is insufficient. The recommended review and replacement is annual, coinciding with the seasonal stranding, although in waters with high conductivity or ports with eddy currents it may be necessary to review it every six months. Replacing the CMXC-07 anode preventively during each seasonal maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft and propeller, the repair or replacement of which involves a much higher cost.
