ANODE JUNGLE LUNGA
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are the galvanic shield of the outboard motor: they corrode in a controlled manner to protect the most valuable metal parts – motor body, propeller, gearbox and lower casing – against electrolytic corrosion caused by contact with salt or brackish water. This anode is designed specifically for Selva engines, guaranteeing the exact geometry and attachment point required for each exposed area of the propellant. Without cathodic protection in good condition, the aluminum of the lower case and the brass or stainless steel components degrade rapidly, compromising the structural integrity of the engine and generating very costly repair failures.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is if it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: if it appears reduced, irregular or with deep pits, it no longer offers sufficient protection. The anodes of boats that regularly sail in salt water should be checked at the beginning and end of each season, and replaced at least once a year; In areas of high salinity or with the boat permanently in water, a quarterly inspection is the recommended practice. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical investment possible compared to the cost of replacing a gearbox or lower casing affected by galvanic corrosion.
