Description

Function and technical context

The zinc anode with cap is a cathodic protection element designed to be installed directly on the engine block or at strategic points on the hull and transmission of boats equipped with Baudouin engines. Its mission is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to protect the most valuable metal parts of the engine and transmission - such as the block, cylinder head, collectors and axles - against galvanic corrosion caused by contact with salt or brackish water. The design with integrated plug (w/plug) facilitates threaded mounting at the purging or emptying points of the refrigeration circuit, guaranteeing a hermetic seal and a sacrificial surface in direct contact with the refrigerant fluid. If this component is completely consumed without being replaced in time, corrosion will advance on the structural parts of the engine, seriously compromising its integrity and generating high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The anodes must be inspected at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and replaced when they have lost more than 50% of their mass, present cracks, have partially detached from the support or show a completely passivated grayish-white surface without reactive capacity. In Baudouin motors that operate in waters with high salinity or high galvanic currents (vessels with electrical installations on board or in ports with a lot of traffic), wear may be faster and require inspection every 6 months. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid internal corrosion of the cooling circuit and costly repair work on the block or cylinder head that would result in a protection failure at sea.
