Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection of marine engines submerged or in contact with salt water. Made of zinc or aluminum, it degrades in a controlled manner to prevent galvanic corrosion on vital metal parts of the engine such as the cylinder block, cooling system and water intake areas. This electrochemical process maintains the structural integrity of the propellant, preventing the formation of rust and perforation of components that would lead to internal leaks, loss of tightness and irreversible damage to the combustion chamber.
When to replace this part?
The anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when it is worn by more than 50% of its volume or when a visible reduction in size is observed. Symptoms of a deteriorated anode include accelerated corrosion visible on the exterior of the engine, rust deposits around the freshwater outlet ports, and in advanced cases, small leaks or drips from the engine block. Preventive replacement before the start of the season is the recommended practice for boats in regular use, avoiding costly navigation breakdowns and prolonging the useful life of the propeller.
