Description

Function and technical context

The aluminum anode is a cathodic protection component that acts in the cooling circuit and systems exposed to salt water in Yamaha outboard engines. Its main function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion in nobler metallic parts of the engine, such as cylinder blocks, cylinder heads and internal components of the cooling circuit. When installed in areas of contact with seawater, the anode preferentially oxidizes, acting as a protective barrier and preventing corrosion from damaging critical engine elements. If the anode is not replaced in time, accelerated corrosion can compromise the tightness of the engine block, cause internal microcracks, reduce the useful life of the engine and, in extreme cases, allow water to enter the combustion chambers.

When to replace this part?

The aluminum anodes should be checked and replaced at the end of each boating season or after 100-150 hours of operation, depending on the salinity and quality of the water used. Symptoms of wear include visible corrosion on the anode, loss of material, whitish or gray deposits on its surface, and premature oxidation on other metal engine components. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each navigation campaign is the most effective strategy to protect the investment in the engine and avoid costly repairs derived from internal corrosion.
