Description
Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the anti-corrosion protection of marine engines operating in salt water. It is installed in the engine cooling circuit and acts as an electrochemical barrier, attracting corrosive salt water ions towards itself instead of towards the vital metal parts of the propellant. This sacrificial mechanism prevents the progressive degradation of cylinders, cylinder heads and internal cooling galleries, components whose corrosion would cause internal leaks, loss of sealing and catastrophic engine failures.
When to replace this part?
The anode must be inspected at the end of each sailing season, since its consumption is progressive and inevitable in salt water. Symptoms of exhaustion include visible corrosion deposits in the engine core, presence of metallic particles in the coolant and, in advanced stages, loss of power or intermittent overheating. Preventive replacement at the beginning of the navigation season is the practice recommended by manufacturers, guaranteeing maximum protection during months of intense use and avoiding high-cost repairs to internal components of the propeller.
