Function and technical context

The ring-shaped cathodic protection anode is an essential component in Mercury marine engines that acts within the defense system against electrochemical corrosion. Its main function is to sacrifice itself galvanically to protect the metal parts of the engine exposed to salt water, avoiding the corrosive attack that would quickly degrade cylinders, liners and internal structures of the power block. When installed in the engine casing, it acts as a permanent defensive barrier, maintaining structural integrity even in aggressive marine environments. Without this defense component, corrosion would progress progressively, compromising the sealing of the engine and allowing water to enter critical areas that would paralyze the boat.

When to replace this part?

The anode must be replaced when it shows visible erosion, loss of material or consumption that significantly reduces its thickness, typical symptoms of progressive wear inherent to its sacrificial function. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at the beginning of each navigation season and replace it preventively if it has lost more than 50% of its volume, since its effectiveness decreases as it is consumed. Preventative replacement before it is completely depleted ensures continued engine protection and prevents costly repairs from internal corrosion that can render your boat unusable on the water.
