Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial element in the outboard motor's galvanic protection system, absorbing electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise destroy critical metal components of the powertrain: the tail casing, propeller shaft and submerged aluminum parts. Made of high-purity zinc, it is especially suitable for use in salt and brackish water, environments where galvanic corrosion acts more aggressively. Its progressive and controlled deterioration is precisely the sign that you are correctly protecting the investment that the engine represents.

When to replace this part?

The main indicator that the anode needs replacement is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the zinc has been consumed by half, its protective capacity is compromised and the engine components are exposed to corrosion. It is recommended to inspect it at the beginning and end of each navigation season, replacing it at least once a year in areas of salt water or areas with high electrical conductivity. Replacing it preventively is always more economical than repairing or replacing structural engine parts damaged by galvanic corrosion.
