Function and technical context

The 60º thermostat acts as a thermostatic valve within the cooling circuit of the outboard motor, regulating the flow of seawater or coolant to the heat exchanger based on the instantaneous temperature of the block. By opening at 60ºC, it allows the propeller to quickly reach its efficient working temperature and keep it stable throughout navigation, avoiding both prolonged cold operation and temperature peaks that damage seals, pistons and cylinder heads. In medium and high power engines, this component is critical to guarantee correct combustion, lubricating oil performance and the life of internal components; A thermostat blocked in the open position causes the engine to never reach its optimal temperature, while one blocked in the closed position generates immediate overheating with the risk of serious breakdown at sea.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged thermostat are: the engine takes too long to reach normal operating temperature or does not reach it at all, the temperature gauge oscillates irregularly during navigation, or the engine enters thermal protection mode with a sudden loss of power even though the cooling system appears to be working correctly. It is recommended to inspect the thermostat at each seasonal tune-up and plan its preventive replacement after 500 hours of use or in the event of any anomaly in the thermal management of the engine. Replacing it before it fails completely is the simplest and most economical way to avoid a major breakdown during navigation.
