Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is the key element of the cathodic protection system of an outboard motor: it oxidizes in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the engine - propeller, casing, shafts and alloy components - against galvanic corrosion caused by the action of salt, brackish or electrolyzed water. This Vetus KGF75-95 anode (ref. TEN03507) is specifically designed to be mounted on Vetus outboard motors from the KGF75-95 range, ensuring effective protection of the noblest metals of the propulsion assembly. Without an anode in good condition, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the structural and functional parts of the engine, potentially causing irreversible pitting in the lower casing, the propeller shaft or the fixing screws, with consequent high-cost repairs or even rendering the engine unit unusable.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume it must be replaced immediately, as it no longer effectively protects the metal components of the engine. The inspection and replacement of the sacrificial anode must be carried out at least once per nautical season, or sooner if the boat usually operates in waters with high electrical conductivity or strong galvanic current. Changing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to much higher value parts, such as the engine foot or the transmission shaft.
