Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are essential elements in the cathodic protection of vessels, acting as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion that attacks submerged metals. This oval zinc anode protects the metal parts of the hull, propellers, shafts and transmission accessories that are in permanent contact with salt or brackish water, absorbing corrosion instead. Without an anode in good condition, the noble metals of the boat—aluminum, bronze, stainless steel—degrade rapidly, generating structural damage that can be extremely expensive to repair. Its 100x38 mm oval geometry makes it ideal for mounting on hulls, keels and flat surfaces with reduced space, offering an efficient reaction surface for anti-corrosion protection.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that a sacrificial anode needs replacement is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it no longer offers effective protection and must be replaced immediately. Checking and inspecting the anodes should be done at least once a season, ideally during the annual docking or whenever the boat is taken out of the water for maintenance. Replacing the anode preventively is one of the most economical interventions and has the greatest impact on the useful life of the submerged components; postponing it can lead to irreversible corrosion of high-cost parts such as propellers, shafts or aluminum hulls.
