Function and technical context

The water intake flap is the component responsible for capturing water from the sea or lake to feed the cooling circuit of the outboard motor. It acts as the inlet of the water cooling system: its square geometry and aerodynamic profile guarantee a constant and sufficient flow to the water pump, even at high sailing speed. If this element deteriorates, becomes clogged or loses its shape, the cooling flow rate is drastically reduced, exposing the engine to overheating and irreversible damage to the block, cylinder head and impeller. A water intake in good condition is, therefore, a critical safety element for the integrity of the engine.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged or worn water intake flap include the appearance of a temperature alarm, absence or reduction of the cooling water jet in the control nozzle ("engine pee") and overheating of the engine even at idle. It is recommended to visually inspect the earmuff during each seasonal maintenance, paying attention to cracks, deformations or cavitation erosion, especially when navigating through waters with sediment or sand. Replacing this component preventively—along with the water pump impeller—is a common practice among professional naval mechanics that prevents serious and costly breakdowns at sea.
