Description

Function and technical context

The 125mm rudder anode is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to be installed on the boat's rudder, acting as a sacrificial electrode against galvanic corrosion. It works in the hull's cathodic protection system, together with the shaft, blade and hull anodes, forming an electrochemical barrier that protects submerged metal surfaces—stainless steel, bronze, aluminum—from the corrosive action of salt or brackish water. Being a less noble metal than the structural components of the boat, the anode preferentially corrodes, preserving the integrity of the rudder and its hardware. If not replaced in time, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the rudder blade, pins and supports, compromising maneuverability and navigation safety.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the rudder anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: it appears visibly reduced, with irregular surfaces, fragmented or whitish in zinc anodes. The standard recommendation is to inspect and replace the rudder anodes at least once a season, coinciding with the annual maintenance beaching; In areas with high water conductivity or boats that remain in the water continuously, a review may be necessary every six months. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid structural damage to the rudder that leads to expensive repairs or even complete replacement of the blade.
