Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial element in the outboard motor's cathodic protection system, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the structural metal parts of the propeller. Being made of high-purity zinc, it is especially suitable for use in salt water and brackish water, where electrolytic corrosion is more aggressive. Its correct installation on the engine protects critical components such as the transmission unit housing, tail shaft and other submerged metal elements. A depleted or missing anode exposes the engine to irreversible corrosion damage that can compromise the structural integrity of the powertrain.

When to replace this part?

It is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning and end of each nautical season: when wear exceeds 50% of the anode volume, it is essential to replace it before launching the boat again. The most obvious symptoms of a depleted anode are the appearance of pitting, surface corrosion or visible erosion on the submerged metal parts of the engine. Replacing the anode preventively, without waiting for it to be completely consumed, is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to the transmission unit or motor casing.
