Description

Function and technical context

The 140mm stern anode is the cathodic protection element responsible for electrochemically sacrificing itself to preserve the submerged metal parts of the boat, especially the stern, tailshaft, propeller and stainless steel or bronze hardware. It works within the galvanic protection system of the hull and propulsion appendages, acting as a sacrificial metal that absorbs corrosion before it reaches the structural and transmission components. Its absence or depletion leaves the noble metals of the stern exposed to accelerated galvanic corrosion, especially in salty or brackish waters, where the electrolytic process is much more aggressive. This complete 140 mm anode (reference TEN00131C) is designed to offer adequate protective coverage for the aft area, including all the fixing elements necessary for its correct installation.

When to replace this aft anode?

The clearest indicator that the aft anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: an anode that is severely reduced, cracked, or has acquired a whitish color and earthy texture no longer offers effective protection. As a general rule, zinc or aluminum anodes for marine use should be checked at least once a season—usually during the annual stranding—and replaced whenever their wear exceeds half of the initial volume, regardless of the time elapsed, since in areas of high galvanic activity they can be exhausted in a few months. Replacing the anode preventively during dry maintenance is the most economical decision: a worn anode that is not replaced in time can lead to pitting and destruction of the propeller shaft, the horn or the stern fittings, failures whose repair multiplies the cost exponentially compared to the price of this part.
