Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the main cathodic protection mechanism in marine engines and diesel propellers: they corrode in a controlled manner to protect the noble metal parts of the engine (engine body, exchangers, shafts and propellers) against galvanic corrosion caused by contact with seawater or fresh water with minerals. This 26 mm anode is designed specifically for Solé Diesel engines, fitting into the fixing points provided by the manufacturer and guaranteeing a sacrificial surface suitable for the power and size of these powertrains. Without effective cathodic protection, aluminum, bronze, or cast iron engine components are exposed to electrolysis and accelerated corrosion, which can lead to serious engine failure, coolant leaks, or structural loss of critical engine block parts.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost more than 50% of its volume, it no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. In Solé Diesel engines that work in salt or brackish water, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once per nautical season and replace them preventively at each annual beaching, regardless of their apparent condition, since a consumed or detached anode can leave the engine without galvanic protection for months. Changing the anode at each stop is one of the most economical and effective maintenance interventions to avoid costly repairs due to corrosion in the cooling circuit or engine block.
