Function and technical context

The shaft anode is a cathodic protection element designed to be installed directly on the tail shaft of the boat, acting as a sacrificial metal against galvanic corrosion produced by prolonged immersion in salt or brackish water. Its mission is to rust in a controlled manner instead of the most valuable metal components of the propulsion system, such as the shaft itself, the rudder servo or the shaft line bearings. This model has a diameter of 70 mm (reference CMXC-70), which makes it compatible with axles of that standard size in recreational and work boats. Without effective cathodic protection, electrolysis can cause severe and irreversible damage to the propeller, shaft and other submerged parts of the drive train.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, generally at the annual beaching, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass: if the anode appears badly eroded, cracked or reduced to less than half its volume, it no longer offers sufficient protection. An indirect symptom of exhaustion is the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on the tail shaft or propeller. It is recommended to replace the anode preventively at each seasonal tune-up, especially in areas with high water conductivity, since an exhausted anode during navigation can lead to costly damage to the shaft or line bearings that forces unplanned stranding.
