Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be mounted directly on the boat's tail shaft, protecting it against galvanic corrosion that occurs when dissimilar metals come into contact in an electrolytic medium such as seawater or fresh water. This aluminum anode for 2-1/2 inch shaft acts as a sacrificial metal, oxidizing in a controlled manner in place of the shaft, propeller and other metal components of the propulsion system. The choice of aluminum as a material makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, where it offers superior electrochemical performance to zinc in most conditions. Without healthy cathodic protection, the drive shaft can suffer from pitting, sectional thinning and accelerated corrosion that compromises the structural integrity of the system and can lead to extremely costly off-season repairs.

When to replace this part?

The general rule in cathodic protection establishes that an anode should be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, since below that threshold its protective capacity drops significantly. Symptoms that indicate a depleted or missing anode include pitting or rust spots on the shaft, greenish or whitish discoloration of the metal surface, and visible wear on the propeller or stern tube. It is recommended to inspect and replace the shaft anodes at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching of the boat; In areas of high galvanic activity or on boats with complex electrical installations, a semiannual inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid replacement of the entire shaft or damage to the horn and tail bearing.
