Function and technical context

This sacrificial anode is designed specifically for Selva outboard motors and acts as a protective element against galvanic corrosion. It works within the engine's cathodic protection system, deliberately exposing itself to oxidation to preserve the noble metal parts of the block, casing and engine foot components. Its presence is essential in boats that sail in both salt water and fresh water with dissolved minerals, environments where galvanic corrosion can deteriorate structural components in a few weeks. Without an anode in good condition, electrolysis acts directly on aluminum alloys and other metals in the engine, compromising the mechanical integrity of the assembly.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has completed its cycle is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is no longer effective. It is recommended that the anode be inspected at each seasonal maintenance and, as a general rule, replaced once a year if the boat regularly operates in salt or brackish waters. Changing the anode preventively with reference TEN01916 is a minimal investment that prevents corrosion of high-cost parts such as the engine foot or the aluminum block.
