The 55mm shaft anode is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to be mounted on the tail shaft of the vessel, acting as a sacrificial metal against galvanic corrosion. It works within the underwater transmission system, protecting it along with the adjacent metal surfaces—propeller, horn, and bearing—from electrochemical attack caused by prolonged immersion in salt or mixed water. Its correct installation guarantees that corrosion is concentrated in the anode and not in structural components of the shaft, whose degradation could compromise the integrity of the transmission and cause vibrations, play or even loss of tightness of the hull. When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is the reduction of its mass by more than 50%, at which point it stops offering effective cathodic protection; Incipient corrosion can also be seen on the shaft itself or the propeller, indicating that the sacrificial metal no longer absorbs the electrochemical potential. Shaft anodes should be checked at each docking and, as a general rule, replaced at the beginning of each nautical season or each time the boat remains in the water for more than six months. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance intervention possible: the cost of a sacrificial part is negligible compared to a tailshaft repair or replacement.
