Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the metallic components of the drive assembly. This zinc anode for 37 mm shaft acts directly on the tail shaft, protecting it against galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals come into contact in a conductive medium such as salt or brackish water. Without adequate anodic protection, the drive shaft, stern tube, and adjacent bronze or stainless steel elements are exposed to accelerated deterioration that can compromise the structural integrity of the shaft line and result in vibrations, stern tube clearances, or even shaft fracture under demanding sailing conditions.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the shaft anode has reached the end of its useful life is a reduction in mass by more than 50%, at which point it no longer offers sufficient protection; Other signs are the appearance of pits or rust marks on the drive shaft or nearby metal accessories, which indicates that corrosion has begun to attack the noble parts. It is recommended to inspect and replace the anode at the beginning of each nautical season or, at least, every 12 months, since its effectiveness depends directly on the mass of zinc available. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid replacing a drive shaft or a horn, interventions that require grounding and entail a much higher cost.
