AUTO-PROP H6 ALUMINUM PROPELLER ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes for self-propelled propellers such as H6 in aluminum are part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a galvanic barrier between submerged metals and salt or brackish water. This anode is installed directly on the Auto-prop H6 propeller, protecting it from electrolytic corrosion caused by eddy currents and the potential difference between different metals in contact with the marine electrolyte. Its function is to gradually sacrifice itself—oxidising before the bronze or stainless steel of the propeller—to preserve the integrity of the propulsion assembly. The aluminum alloy used makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, where it offers more effective protection potential than zinc under certain conditions.
When to replace this part?
The anode should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass or presents an irregular shape that indicates advanced wear; Waiting for it to disappear completely leaves the propeller unprotected and exposed to severe and irreversible corrosion. Symptoms of insufficient protection include visible pitting on the propeller hub or blades, loss of material on nearby metal surfaces, and, in severe cases, looseness or difficulty turning the shaft. Replacing the anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid replacing an Auto-prop H6 propeller, the cost of which is considerably higher.
