Function and technical context

The line-cutting anode is a galvanic protection component specifically designed to be installed in the area of the tail shaft or near the propulsion system, fulfilling a double function: protecting the submerged metal parts from electrolytic corrosion and, at the same time, acting as a line-cutting element that prevents ropes, fishing lines or filamentary algae from becoming entangled in the propeller shaft or buttress. As it is a sacrificial anode, this component preferably absorbs corrosion before it affects more critical and expensive parts such as the shaft, propeller or hull closures. Its correct condition is essential to guarantee the structural integrity of the submerged propulsion elements throughout the navigation season.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be visually inspected at least at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass or present an irregular surface with advanced erosion; If the anode appears completely consumed or fragmented, the propulsion system has been left unprotected and corrosion processes may have already begun in the shaft or propeller. In waters with high salinity or in boats that remain anchored for long periods, wear can be significantly faster, so a review every 6 months is recommended. Replacing the linecutter anode preventively, before it is completely used up, is the most economical way to avoid severe damage to the shaft or propeller, the repair of which can be very expensive and put the boat out of service.
