Description

Function and technical context

The model B line cutter anode is a cathodic protection component designed to be installed on the propeller shaft or propulsion line of motor boats. Its double function is notable: on the one hand, it acts as a galvanic sacrifice, protecting submerged metal parts against electrolytic corrosion caused by the potential difference between metals in contact with water; On the other hand, it incorporates a cutting profile that cuts ropes, fibrous algae, nets and fishing lines that can become entangled in the drive shaft before they reach the stuffing box or the shaft seal. Without this protection, the accumulation of rolled materials can block the shaft, damage the sealing seals and cause water to enter the hull, with serious consequences for the safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The wear of the line-cutting anode is detected visually: when the zinc or aluminum alloy mass has lost more than 50% of its volume, the cathodic protection capacity is compromised and must be replaced immediately. The inspection is recommended at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the annual beaching, although in areas with highly conductive salt water or in intensive use vessels an intermediate inspection may be necessary. Replacing the line-cutting anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft, breakage of the sealing seal and the subsequent entry of water, breakdowns that in navigation can lead to high-cost repairs or emergency situations.
