Function and technical context

This aluminum hull anode with dimensions 235x86 mm acts as galvanic protection for the boat's hull, electrochemically sacrificing itself to prevent corrosion of submerged structural metals: propellers, shafts, rudders and metal accessories of the hull. It works within the cathodic protection system, creating a potential difference that diverts galvanic corrosion towards the anode itself instead of towards the vital components of the vessel. The aluminum alloy makes it especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, where the electrochemical activity is more aggressive than in fresh water. If the anode is depleted without being replaced in time, the noble metals of the hull and transmission are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the boat and generate breakdowns with high repair costs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be changed is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, the cathodic protection is no longer sufficient and the risk of corrosion on the hull metals increases significantly. As a general preventive maintenance guideline, it is recommended to inspect the hull anodes at least once a season—usually during the annual docking—and replace them whenever they show wear greater than 50%, regardless of the time elapsed, since the aggressiveness of the water and the density of galvanic currents vary depending on the port and the navigation area. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid serious damage to shafts, propellers and metal hulls that can lead to repairs costing several thousand euros.
