Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes for Flex or Fold type propellers are part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical barrier against galvanic corrosion that affects submerged metal components. Its function is to rust in a controlled manner instead of the structural and mechanical elements of the drive unit, protecting the propeller hub, the shaft and the adjacent parts of the transmission. Without active cathodic protection and in good condition, corrosion can attack parts that are more expensive and difficult to replace, compromising the integrity of the propulsion system and the safety of the vessel in navigation.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost 30% to 50% of their initial mass, regardless of the time elapsed, as a depleted anode leaves the metal components of the propellant unprotected. In boats that remain in the water for long periods or navigate in areas with high electrical conductivity of water, wear can be significantly faster. Preventatively replacing the anode at each grounding or annual inspection is a recommended practice that prevents costly repairs to the shaft, propeller or drive components.
