Function and technical context
The sacrificial anode is a critical component in the cathodic protection of submerged or partially submerged marine engines. Made of aluminum, it acts as a defensive barrier against electrochemical corrosion generated by salt water on the metal parts of the engine. It gradually degrades instead of the engine block, cylinder head and cast iron components, preventing them from suffering accelerated rust. Without this element, marine corrosion would directly attack the critical surfaces of the engine, compromising sealing, heat transfer and structural integrity.
When to replace this part?
The anode requires periodic inspection before each boating season and should be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass or shows accelerated active corrosion. In salt water, wear is faster than in fresh water; It is recommended to change it annually or every 200-300 hours of operation. Preventive anode replacement is the most economical measure to protect the engine from costly marine corrosion damage that can affect internal cooling and overall propulsion durability.
