Function and Technical Context

The conical sacrificial anode protects the submerged metal parts of the outboard motor from galvanic corrosion, acting as a sacrificial electrode that oxidizes preferentially instead of the aluminum or steel components of the block, propeller and shaft. This anode, manufactured from zinc, is part of the motor's cathodic protection system and works in direct contact with the salt, brackish or fresh water in which the vessel operates. Its conical geometry facilitates adjustment and anchoring at the attachment points specifically designed in Johnson and Evinrude motors. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the noble parts of the motor, causing irreversible deterioration of the lower housing, transmission shaft and other metal parts with high repair costs.

When to Replace This Part?

The clearest sign that the conical anode must be replaced is a reduction in its mass exceeding 50%, at which point its protective capacity is compromised; visually, it appears greatly reduced, whitish and with a porous and irregular surface. It is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replace it preventively at least once a year or whenever its wear exceeds half of the initial volume, regardless of the number of operating hours. Changing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to prevent serious corrosion damage to your vessel's engine unit.
