Function and Technical Context

This zinc sacrificial anode acts as cathodic protection for the submerged metal components of the outboard motor, attracting electrolytic corrosion toward itself and preserving the higher-value structural parts such as the block, propeller, and motor foot. It operates within the galvanic protection system, being especially critical in saltwater and brackish water environments where electrolytic corrosion can degrade motor metal within a matter of months. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, corrosion begins to directly attack the metal parts of the motor, which can cause irreversible damage to the motor foot, fastening bolts, or the propulsion unit housing. Its correct installation ensures that the galvanic protection circuit functions continuously throughout the entire boating season.

When to Replace This Part?

The clearest indicator that the zinc anode must be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass, presenting an irregular, porous, or greatly reduced shape compared to its initial size. In vessels that regularly navigate saltwater, it is recommended to check the anode condition at least once per season and replace it preventively before each active boating period, regardless of its appearance if more than twelve months have passed. Not waiting for the anode to disappear completely is the best guarantee to avoid costly repairs to the motor's metal structure.
