Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as cathodic protection in the anti-electrolysis system of the outboard motor, sacrificing itself in a controlled manner to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking the structural metal parts of the motor, such as the casing, shaft or tail. It works in direct contact with water, functioning as a sacrificial electrode that absorbs the electrochemical corrosion generated by the potential difference between different submerged metals. Without a healthy anode, critical aluminum or steel engine components are exposed to accelerated degradation that can compromise the structural integrity of the drive unit and lead to costly and difficult-to-repair breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

A zinc anode should be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, a sign that it no longer offers sufficient protection; Other indications are the appearance of corrosion pits in nearby metal areas or an anode that is visibly eroded, fractured or covered with whitish deposits. It is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning and end of each nautical season, with annual replacement as a general rule in salty or brackish waters. Replacing it preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to structural components of the engine that would imply high-cost repairs or even the replacement of tail parts.
