Function and technical context

Aluminum anodes are part of the cathodic protection system of outboard motors, acting as a sacrificial element to preserve the noblest metal parts—such as the conical group, propeller, trim and casing—against the galvanic corrosion that occurs in salt and brackish water. Aluminum is the recommended sacrificial material for navigation in saline and mixed waters, offering greater electronegativity than zinc in this environment. If the anodes are exhausted without being replaced in time, corrosion directly attacks the structural parts of the engine, causing irreparable damage to the foot, the propeller holder and other components of the transmission and propulsion system.

When to replace this part?

The anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each season and replaced when they have lost approximately half their volume or show advanced irregular corrosion; In areas of high salinity or with scattered electrical current, it may be necessary to change them every full season. Symptoms of depleted anodes include pitting or visible erosion on metal surfaces of the motor foot, abnormal discoloration of the aluminum of the cone group, and the appearance of whitish or greenish deposits around the attachment points. Replacing the complete anode kit preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical way to avoid major repairs to the engine foot.
