Function and technical context

This aluminum anode acts as a sacrificial element in the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, being located in strategic areas of the propulsion unit exposed to salt or brackish water. Its mission is to oxidize preferentially against the structural metals of the engine - casings, axles, propellers and drivetrain components - avoiding galvanic corrosion that deteriorates parts that are expensive and difficult to replace. When the anode is depleted without being replaced, corrosion advances towards critical components of the transmission and engine foot, potentially compromising the mechanical integrity of the entire unit and generating serious navigation breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom of an exhausted anode is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume it must be replaced immediately, without waiting for the end of the season. In engines that normally operate in salt or brackish waters, it is recommended to inspect the anode at each docking and change it at least once a year, before spring launching. Replacing the aluminum anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure to protect the engine foot and transmission components from corrosion damage that can multiply the cost of the repair.
