This aluminum anode acts as a sacrificial element in the galvanic protection system of the outboard motor, installing itself in the engine casing or cover to attract electrolytic corrosion before it affects critical metal components such as the block, transmission or propeller. Being made of aluminum alloy, it is especially suitable for use in salt water and brackish water, environments where galvanic corrosion is more aggressive. Without effective cathodic protection, engine metal parts are exposed to accelerated degradation that can seriously compromise their structural and functional integrity. When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a severely eroded surface, or signs of corrosion appear on adjacent metal parts, indicating that the anode is exhausted. In boats that usually navigate in salt water or in areas with high electrical conductivity, the useful life may be reduced to a single season. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid corrosion damage to high-cost components such as the engine foot or gearbox.
