Function and technical context

This aluminum sacrificial anode is part of the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, acting as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion that affects metal components submerged or in contact with salt, brackish or fresh water. Being a metal with a greater oxidation potential, the aluminum of the anode degrades in a controlled manner instead of the structural components of the engine - tail casing, anti-torque support, propeller and other alloy parts -, significantly prolonging its useful life. If the anode is depleted without being replaced, corrosion advances on much higher cost parts, potentially rendering critical parts of the transmission or engine mount unusable.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs replacing is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: a very irregular, cracked or reduced surface to a metal core indicates that it no longer offers sufficient protection. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at each seasonal inspection and replace them at least once a year in salt water, or every two seasons in fresh water, never paint or sand them excessively, as this interrupts the sacrifice process. Replacing the anode preventively is the lowest cost intervention that exists to avoid irreparable damage to the tail of the engine far from the port.
