Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, protecting it against galvanic corrosion caused by prolonged immersion in salt, brackish or fresh water. Being a metal with a greater negative electrochemical potential than the aluminum or steel of the motor housing and shaft, zinc oxidizes preferentially, preserving the structural metal parts of the motor group. Its correct operation is critical to avoid pitting of the lower crankcase, corrosion of the propeller shaft and premature deterioration of internal components exposed to the marine environment.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom of anode exhaustion is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its volume it must be replaced without delay; If it appears completely consumed, the metal parts of the engine will have been left unprotected and it is advisable to inspect for possible corrosion damage. It is recommended to check the condition of the anodes at the beginning of each nautical season and, in especially aggressive waters or in boats with electrical installations on board, every six months. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid major repairs to the drive train or engine casing.
