Function and technical context

This aluminum sacrificial anode protects the submerged metal parts of the Suzuki outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, one of the main enemies of naval mechanics in marine and brackish environments. It acts within the cathodic protection system: being a more electrochemically active metal, it corrodes preferentially rather than the structural parts of the engine, such as the transmission housing, tailshaft or lower drive unit components. Its correct installation is essential to preserve the integrity of the propulsion block; Without it, corrosion can irreversibly affect high-cost components such as the gearbox or propeller. Made of aluminum alloy, it is especially suitable for salty and brackish waters, where electrochemical activity is more intense.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half its volume, it must be replaced without delay to ensure continued protection of the motor. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at least once per sailing season, ideally during beaching or the annual inspection of the boat, and replace it whenever it shows more than 50% wear or signs of disintegration. Renewing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance intervention to avoid corrosion damage to parts of the propulsion unit whose repair can be very expensive.
