Function and technical context

This aluminum sacrificial anode protects the submerged metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, one of the main enemies of the durability of marine powertrains. It acts as an active electrode within the cathodic protection system: being a more electronegative metal, it preferentially oxidizes and preserves the casings, axles and internal components of the motor. Its manufacture in aluminum alloy makes it especially suitable for navigation in salt and brackish water, where the electrochemical aggressiveness of the environment is greater. Without a healthy anode, galvanic corrosion can silently attack the shaft housing, propeller or gearbox, causing structural damage that is costly to repair.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has reached its useful life is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, as its protective capacity is severely compromised. It is recommended that the anodes be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced at least once a year or sooner if wear is rapid—which may indicate eddy currents in the boat. Changing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid major repairs in the engine room or naval workshop.
