Description

Function and technical context

The rod anode for Yanmar motor is a cathodic protection element that acts as an electrochemical sacrifice to preserve the metal components of the outboard or inboard motor against galvanic corrosion. It works within the anti-corrosion protection system of the drive assembly, especially in areas exposed to salt, brackish or water with high mineral content where the difference in electrical potential between different metals can generate accelerated and irreversible corrosion. Being a metal with a lower electrochemical potential, the anode degrades in a controlled manner instead of the structural components of the engine, such as the block, gearbox or drive shaft. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic attack can compromise high-cost parts in just a few sailing seasons.

When to replace this part?

Anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 30 and 50% of their mass, as below that level they no longer provide effective cathodic protection. A completely consumed or missing anode is an unequivocal sign that the metal components of the engine may be suffering from active corrosion, which can manifest itself as pitting in the block, erosion in the shaft or deterioration of aluminum surfaces. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season, especially in salty waters or those with high conductivity, is the practice recommended by professional nautical workshops to avoid costly breakdowns and unforeseen stops in navigation.
