YANMAR TAIL ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The tail anode is the sacrificial element that protects the submerged metal parts of the transmission and tail shaft against galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive phenomena in marine environments. It works within the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a negative electrode that preferentially oxidizes rather than higher value components such as the propeller, shaft, tail body or stainless steel flanges. Without effective anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can silently and rapidly degrade critical transmission parts, generating looseness, pitting and structural failures that compromise navigation. This anode is designed specifically for Yanmar mounts, ensuring a precise fit and adequate electrical contact surface for efficient cathodic protection.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the tail anode needs replacement is a visible loss of mass greater than 50% of its initial volume; When the anode appears very reduced, cracked or directly consumed, the cathodic protection is compromised and the metallic components of the tail are exposed to corrosion. It is recommended to inspect and replace the anodes at least once per season, or every time the boat goes into dry dock for hull inspection, regardless of the accumulated sailing hours. Replacing the anode preventively at each beaching is the most economical measure to avoid costly damage to propellers, shafts and tail bodies that can render the boat unusable in the middle of the season.
