Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is a critical component of the cathodic protection system in saltwater and freshwater marine engines. Made of aluminum, it degrades in a controlled manner to protect the internal and external metal surfaces of the engine against galvanic corrosion and electrochemical oxidation. Installed in the coolant circulation area or in direct contact with water, the anode acts as a sacrificial barrier: it corrodes preferably before the noble metals of the engine block, cylinder head and cooling system. Without this active protection, corrosion would advance rapidly on the structural parts, compromising sealing, facilitating the entry of water into cylinders and causing catastrophic engine failure.

When to replace this part?

The sacrificial anode must be inspected at the beginning of each navigation season and replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its thickness, or when it presents accelerated erosion after sailing in waters with high saline content. The symptoms of a depleted anode are not evident to the naked eye during engine operation, but accelerated corrosion in other parts of the cooling system, rust deposits in the leaving water, and increased engine temperature are indicators of insufficient protection. Preventive replacement at the end of the season or every 200-300 hours of saltwater operation prevents costly repairs resulting from engine block corrosion and ensures reliable operation of the boat.
