Description

Function and Technical Context

This fuel filter acts as a protective barrier in the fuel supply circuit, retaining impurities, suspended particles and residues that fuel may carry from the tank to the carburetor or injection system. It operates within the fuel supply system of the outboard or inboard engine, positioned in the supply line before fuel reaches the most sensitive engine components. An obstructed or deteriorated fuel filter causes a flow restriction that results in loss of power, unstable idle or even engine stalling under maximum demand conditions; in extreme cases, impurities passing through it can damage the fuel pump or injectors, resulting in costly repairs. Its periodic replacement is therefore one of the most cost-effective maintenance interventions that can be performed on MerCruiser and Volvo engines.

When to Replace this Part?

The most common symptoms indicating that the fuel filter needs to be replaced are: difficult cold starting, hesitation or loss of power at full throttle, irregular fuel consumption and unstable idle with a tendency to stall. As a general maintenance guideline, it is recommended to replace the fuel filter every 100 hours of operation or at the start of each season, whichever comes first; in areas where fuel has higher water or sediment content, the interval should be shortened. Changing the filter preventively, without waiting for symptoms to appear, is the most effective practice to avoid being stranded by a fuel supply failure in open waters.
